Antero Rubín Homent was an important Spanish general and politician. He was born on February 15, 1851, and passed away on May 1, 1935. He is well-known for his many years serving in Cuba. He also fought in the Spanish-American War. Later in his life, he became a senator, which is like a lawmaker, for the Zamora region in Spain.
Early Military Career
Antero's father was also a military officer. He fought bravely in a war against Morocco. This inspired Antero to join the army too.
Antero joined the Spanish Army on May 11, 1868. When he was just 16, in 1869, he volunteered to serve in Cuba. After a short time, he became a lieutenant. He then returned home to continue his studies in cities like Vigo and Pontevedra.
Later in 1869, Rubín, now a captain, went back to Cuba. He led several military actions against Cuban rebels. He had important victories in places like Estella and Somorrostro.
Spanish-American War
On February 4, 1898, Rubín was promoted to brigadier general. He led the María Cristina Regiment. He showed great skill during the Battle of Las Guasimas.
His small group of soldiers fought a very successful battle. They held back the American forces. Then, they moved back in an orderly way to Santiago de Cuba. This city was later surrounded by American troops.
After a tough fight at San Juan Hill, the Spanish general José Toral y Velázquez surrendered the city on July 18.
Later Life and Legacy
Rubín was one of the few Spanish commanders who was not blamed for the war's outcome. He continued to rise in rank. In 1908, he became a lieutenant general.
In 1917, he was named captain general of Galicia, a region in Spain. He retired from the army in 1923. Today, a street in Pontevedra is named after him.
