Anthony Ashley-Cooper, Lord Ashley (born October 4, 1900 – died March 8, 1947) was a British Army officer. He was the oldest son of the 9th Earl of Shaftesbury. Because of this, he was known by the special title "Lord Ashley".

His Family Life
Lord Ashley was married twice. His first wife was Sylvia Hawkes. They got married on February 3, 1927. They later divorced on November 28, 1934.
His second wife was Françoise Soulier. She was born in France. They married on March 31, 1937. They stayed married until his death in 1947.
Lord Ashley and Françoise had two children. Their son was Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 10th Earl of Shaftesbury. He was born on May 22, 1938. Their daughter was Lady Frances Mary Elizabeth Ashley-Cooper. She was born on April 9, 1940.
Lord Ashley was expected to become the next Earl of Shaftesbury. This is called being the heir apparent. Sadly, he died suddenly at age 46 from heart disease. This happened before his father passed away. Because of this, his son, also named Anthony Ashley-Cooper, became the next heir. He later inherited the earldom in 1961.
His Military Career
Lord Ashley began his military training at Eton College. He joined the Royal Artillery in 1925. He was a second lieutenant at that time. Later, he moved to the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry.
He was promoted to lieutenant in 1929. He also served as an aide-de-camp to Sir Frederick Sykes. Sir Frederick was the Governor of Bombay. Lord Ashley became a captain in 1937. He was promoted to major in 1938.
During World War II, Lord Ashley joined the Intelligence Corps. He served with the Auxiliary Units. These were secret groups. They were trained to fight if Nazi Germany invaded the United Kingdom. Members of these units hid in secret bunkers. Lord Ashley trained at Coleshill House. The exact details of his work remain secret.
He was later transferred to the Royal Armoured Corps. This was part of the Royal Tank Regiment. After he died, he was given the Efficiency Decoration. This award recognized his long and good service.
Order of St John
On December 24, 1943, Lord Ashley received a special honor. He was made an Officer of the Order of St John (OStJ). This is an order of chivalry. It is linked to a charity that provides first aid and healthcare.
