The Life of Anthony Aston
Anthony Aston became famous on the London stage in the early 1700s. Before becoming an actor, he tried different jobs, like studying law. But he loved the theatre most of all and decided to make it his career.
A Talented Writer
Anthony Aston was also a successful writer. He wrote a play called Love in a Hurry, which was performed in Dublin around 1709. He also wrote an opera in 1712 called Pastora, or the Coy Shepherdess. An opera is like a play where most of the words are sung.
Touring the Country
For many years, Anthony Aston traveled all over England. He toured with his wife and son, putting on shows. He would perform plays he wrote himself. Sometimes, he would take parts from different plays and mix them together. He would add his own songs and conversations to make them unique.
His Book of Memories
Aston wrote a small book called A Brief Supplement to Colley Cibber, Esq. It was a bit like another famous book by Colley Cibber. In his 24-page book, Aston shared interesting thoughts about other famous actors of his time. He wrote about people like Thomas Betterton, Anne Bracegirdle, Cave Underhill, and Thomas Doggett.
His Son, Walter
Anthony Aston's son, Walter Aston, also became an actor. He started acting as a child actor in his father's plays. Later, in the 1730s, Walter joined the acting company at the Covent Garden Theatre.
