Anthony Mathias Banzi (born October 28, 1946; died December 20, 2020) was an important Tanzanian Roman Catholic bishop. He dedicated his life to serving the church and his community.

Early Life and Education

Anthony Banzi was born in a small village called Mangoja, which is part of the Tawa Parish in the Diocese of Morogoro. His parents were Mzee Mathias B. Mtigumwe Mwenyembegu and Mama Selestina Mlachiluwa P. Mdime.

He was baptized on November 10, 1946, and was given the names Anthony Simon. He received his First Communion on June 23, 1957, and was confirmed on September 10, 1957.

Anthony Banzi started his primary school education at Lukenge primary school, attending from 1956 to 1959. After that, he began his journey to become a priest. He joined St. Peter Minor Seminary in Bagamoyo in 1960. He continued his studies at St. Charles Minor Seminary in Itaga, Tabora, from 1965 to 1966.

Becoming a Priest

From 1968 to 1969, he studied philosophy at Kibosho Major Seminary in Moshi. He then studied theology at Kipalapala from 1970 to 1973. Anthony Banzi was ordained as a priest on July 29, 1973. This was a very important step in his life of service.

After becoming a priest, he served in many different roles. He was an assistant parish priest in several parishes, including Mlaki, Msongozi, Mtombozi, and Matombo. He also served as a parish priest in Muskati and Turiani in the Mvomero district.

Further Studies and Service

In 1976, Father Banzi worked as an accountant at Ntungamo Major Seminary in Bukoba. In the same year, he traveled to Innsbruck, Austria, to continue his education. He earned a doctoral degree in philosophy in 1981.

After returning to Tanzania, he continued his dedicated service. From 1981 to 1982, he served as a priest for the sick at Turiani hospital. Later, he became a parish priest at Mandera parish in the Diocese of Morogoro. He also served as the chief accountant for the Diocese of Morogoro from 1982 to 1985.

From 1985 to 1987, he was a spiritual director at Bigwa Secondary School in Morogoro. His role was to guide students in their faith. From 1988 to 1991, he was the vice-rector at Ntungamo Major Seminary in Bukoba.

Becoming a Bishop

In 1992, Father Banzi was appointed rector of Kibosho Major Seminary in Moshi. He served in this important leadership role until Pope John Paul II chose him to be the fourth Bishop of the Tanga Diocese. This appointment happened on June 24, 1994. He was officially consecrated as a bishop on September 15, 1994.

His Time as Bishop

As the spiritual leader of the Tanga Diocese, Bishop Banzi lived by three important mottos: "Wisdom, Unity, and Peace." These words guided his work and his life.

On September 15, 2019, he celebrated a very special milestone: 25 years of being a bishop. This was a big celebration of his many years of service to the church and its people.

Later Life and Legacy

Bishop Anthony Banzi bravely battled throat cancer. He passed away on December 20, 2020. His life was an example of dedication and service to his faith and community.
