Anthony Browne (born July 22, 1552 – died June 29, 1592) was an important English gentleman. He held the role of Sheriff for the counties of Surrey and Kent in 1580. Anthony Browne was set to inherit a large family estate in Sussex. Sadly, he passed away just four months before his father. His sister, Mary, married Henry Wriothesley, 2nd Earl of Southampton. Their son was Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton.

Early Life and Family
Anthony Browne was born in 1552 at Cowdray House in Midhurst, Sussex. He was the oldest son of Anthony Browne, 1st Viscount Montagu. His mother was Lady Jane Radcliffe. She was a daughter of Robert Radcliffe, 1st Earl of Sussex.
Anthony had a twin sister named Mary. Sadly, their mother, Lady Jane, died during their birth. Their family had a long history of important people. Their grandfather and great-grandfather were also named Anthony Browne.
In 1558, Anthony's father married again to Magdalen Dacre. Anthony's stepmother, Magdalen, was very kind to him. She cared for his health as if he were her own son. She even helped him get back into his father's good graces once.
Marriage and Children
In 1572, Anthony Browne married Mary Dormer. She was the daughter of Sir William Dormer. Anthony and Mary had two sons:
- Anthony-Maria (born March 1574)
- John
They also had three daughters:
- Dorothy, who married Edmund Lee
- Jane, who married Sir Francis Englefield
- Katherine, who married John Tregonwell
In 1580, Anthony Browne became the Sheriff of Surrey and Kent. This job usually lasted for one year.
Family Connections and Challenges
Anthony's twin sister, Mary, married Henry Wriothesley, 2nd Earl of Southampton in 1566. They had a son named Henry in 1573. Anthony and his wife sometimes traveled with Mary and her husband.
However, things became difficult for Mary and her husband around 1577. The Earl of Southampton became upset with Mary. This caused problems between the two families. In 1580, one of the Earl's servants was even arrested for misbehaving towards Anthony Browne.

Later Life and Passing
In August 1591, Queen Elizabeth I visited Cowdray House for six days. It is not known if Anthony Browne was there. His half-brother, Henry, helped organize the Queen's hunting trips.
Anthony Browne died on June 29, 1592, at Riverbank House in Cowdray. He was buried in Midhurst, Sussex. His death happened four months before his father passed away.
After Anthony's death, his son, Anthony-Maria, became the 2nd Viscount Montagu. Anthony's widow, Mary Browne, married two more times. In her will, she asked to be buried near Anthony in Midhurst.
