Lady Jane Browne (born Jane Radcliffe; around 1532 – July 22, 1552) was an English noblewoman. She lived during the time of Tudor England, a period of great change.
Jane Radcliffe's Family
Jane Radcliffe was the daughter of Robert Radcliffe, 1st Earl of Sussex. Her mother was Margaret Stanley. Margaret was the daughter of Thomas Stanley, 2nd Earl of Derby.
Jane had a sister named Anne Radcliffe. Anne married Thomas Wharton, 2nd Baron Wharton. Jane also had several half-brothers from her father's other marriages. These included Henry Radcliffe and Sir Humphrey Radcliffe.
Marriage and Children
Jane Radcliffe married Anthony Browne, 1st Viscount Montague. He was the oldest son of Sir Anthony Browne. Anthony Browne became the 1st Viscount Montague in 1554. This was after Jane's death. So, Jane was never called Viscountess Montague during her lifetime.
Jane and Anthony Browne had two children. They were twins, a boy and a girl. They were born on July 22, 1552.
Their Children
- Anthony Browne (born July 22, 1552 – died June 29, 1592). He married Mary Dormer. Anthony passed away before his father. His son, also named Anthony, later became the 2nd Viscount Montague.
- Mary Browne (born July 22, 1552 – died November 4, 1607). She married three times. Her first husband was Henry Wriothesley, 2nd Earl of Southampton.
Sadly, Jane died while giving birth to her twins. She was buried at Midhurst, Sussex.
After Jane's death, Anthony Browne married again. His second wife was Magdalen Dacre.
