Sir Anthony Browne (born 29 June 1443 – died around 17 November 1506) was an important English knight. He was the son of Sir Thomas Browne and Eleanor FitzAlan. He held key roles for King Henry VII, including carrying the King's flag and being in charge of the town of Calais.
Sir Anthony Browne's Life and Work
Sir Anthony Browne was born at Betchworth Castle in England. He was a younger son in his family. His father was Sir Thomas Browne, and his mother was Eleanor FitzAlan. He also had an older brother named Sir George Browne.
During the time of King Henry VII, Sir Anthony had several important jobs. He was the Standard Bearer of England, which meant he carried the King's special flag. He was also the Governor of Queenborough Castle. Most importantly, he was the Constable of Calais. Calais was a very important port city in France that belonged to England at that time.
Sir Anthony Browne passed away in Calais in 1506. He was 63 years old.
His Wife's Royal Connections
Sir Anthony's second wife was Lucy Neville. She was a strong supporter of the House of York, a different royal family from King Henry VII. People noticed that Lucy did not seem to like King Henry VII very much.
She was thought to be helping her cousin, Edmund de la Pole, who also wanted to be king. This made King Henry VII's supporters worried. They were concerned that Lucy might try to take control of Calais, which was a very important fortress, and hold it for her cousin.
Because of these worries, Lucy was later fined a large amount of money. This was likely a warning from the King to stop getting involved in politics. After this, she lived peacefully until her death in 1534.
