Anthony Glavin (born August 7, 1945 – died November 14, 2006) was an Irish poet and a professor of music. He taught at the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

Anthony Glavin was born in Dublin, Ireland. His parents were Kathleen and James J. Glavin. His father was part of the War of Independence. Later, his father worked for the Irish Sugar Company.

Anthony went to the O'Connell School in Dublin. He was very good at drama and music. He later studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM). His teacher there was Dina Copeman.

After school, Anthony studied at University College Dublin (UCD) and Trinity College, Dublin. In 1963, he acted in a play. It was called The Yeomen of the Guard. He played the character Jack Point at The Gaiety Theatre in Dublin. He was also active in UCD's drama society, called Dramsoc.

Anthony joined the staff at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in 1969. Many of his students became famous singers and musicians. Some of them include Peter Tuite, Sarah Picardo, John Picardo, Michelle Picardo, Niamh McGarry, and Robin Tritschler.

Anthony Glavin passed away in Dublin. The Royal Irish Academy of Music held a special time of mourning for him.

Anthony Glavin's Poetry

Anthony Glavin started writing and publishing poetry when he was at university. His poems appeared in many newspapers and journals. His work was first included in a book called Irish Poets 1924–74.

In 1987, Anthony won the Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award. His own collection of poems, The Wrong Side of the Alps, was published in 1989. The next year, he received an award from the Arts Council of Ireland. His book was also nominated for the Irish Book Awards. A writer named Fred Johnston said his book was "a fine, careful book."

Anthony Glavin worked for a long time on a special series of poems. It was originally called Living In Hiroshima. He was deeply affected by his birthdate, August 7, 1945. This was just one day after the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. He felt that his arrival in the world happened at a time that changed history forever. As one of his poems says, "Everybody lives in Hiroshima."

In 1990, Anthony planned to travel to Japan. He wanted to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He aimed to learn even more for his poetry.
