Who Was Anthony Langston?
Anthony Langston was the son of Henry Langston. His family lived in Sedgeberrow, Littleton. In 1604, he was chosen by Lord Cecil to be an official, or Steward, for a place called King's Norton.
Langston's Time in Parliament
Anthony Langston became a Member of Parliament (MP) for the town of Evesham. He was first elected in 1614. He was chosen again to be an MP for Evesham in 1621, 1625, and 1626. This means he represented the people of Evesham in the English government for several years.
Anthony Langston and the English Civil War
Anthony Langston was a strong supporter of King Charles I during the English Civil War. This war was a big conflict in England between those who supported the King (Royalists) and those who supported Parliament (Parliamentarians).
Langston's Role in the War
In 1643, the city of Worcester gave Langston a special honor, making him an Honorary Freeman. This showed how much the city appreciated his support for the King.
Captured After the Siege
The city of Worcester was under attack during the war. This was known as the Siege of Worcester. When the city finally gave up on July 19, 1646, Anthony Langston was captured. After being taken prisoner, he had to make an agreement to settle things and avoid further punishment for supporting the King.
