Club Career Highlights
Starting at Liverpool
Anthony was born in Hennebont, France. He joined the famous English club Liverpool in 2001. He came from Le Havre AC along with his cousin, Florent Sinama Pongolle. They both impressed scouts while playing for France's youth teams. This was especially true at the FIFA U-17 World Cup, which France won! Anthony even won the 'Silver Ball' award as the second-best player in that tournament.
Anthony made his first appearance for Liverpool in a league match against Blackburn Rovers. He scored his first and only goal for Liverpool in a UEFA Cup game in October 2003. This was against NK Olimpija Ljubljana. He was also part of the team that won the UEFA Champions League in 2005. He started in a quarter-final match against Juventus FC.
Loan to Sunderland
For the 2005–06 season, Anthony joined another Premier League team, Sunderland, on loan. He wanted to play more often. He said, "I am a competitor and I want to play all the time, but with Liverpool it was impossible." Sunderland had a tough season and finished last in the league. However, Anthony was their top scorer with five goals. He scored on his first game for them against Manchester City. He also scored a header against Fulham, helping Sunderland get their only home win that season.
After this, Anthony returned to Liverpool. But he wasn't given a squad number by the manager, Rafael Benítez. He then played for the French under-21s in the European Championship in Portugal.
Playing in France Again
In August 2006, Anthony moved to FC Sochaux-Montbéliard on another loan deal. He helped them win the Coupe de France, which is a big French cup competition. He scored a very important goal late in the final match. This goal led to a penalty shootout against Olympique de Marseille. Sochaux won the shootout!
In August 2007, Anthony moved to Ligue 1 team Le Mans Union Club 72. He was on loan for the whole season. In July 2008, Le Mans decided to sign him permanently. He stayed there for four years. On June 27, 2010, he joined another French club, AJ Auxerre, for a four-year deal.
Later Career
On July 19, 2015, Anthony signed with Atromitos F.C. in Greece for two years. He said he wanted to play in the UEFA Europa League, which is another big European competition.
On July 3, 2017, Anthony, who was 32 years old, joined FC Astra Giurgiu in Romania. He returned to France in the next transfer window, joining Ligue 2 team US Orléans.
In September 2019, Anthony signed with Annecy FC. He officially retired from professional football in May 2021, after playing for twenty years.
Personal Life
Anthony's younger brother, Damien, is also a footballer. He also trained at Le Havre, just like Anthony. Damien started his professional career in Germany with Borussia Dortmund.
In June 2023, Anthony was a witness to an unfortunate event in a park in Annecy, France. Several children and an adult were injured during the incident.
