Anthony Thompson's Boxing Journey
Starting as an Amateur
Anthony Thompson had a very successful amateur boxing career. In 2000, he became the National Golden Gloves Welterweight Champion. This is a big achievement in amateur boxing.
He also won the USA National Championships in 2000. In the same year, he won the National (PAL) Police Athletic League Championship. Winning these three major titles in one year is very rare. It is sometimes called the "triple crown" of amateur boxing.
In 2001, Anthony Thompson won the USA National Champion title again. He also finished as the runner-up at the 2001 World Championship in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He lost to Lorenzo Aragon from Cuba in that final match.
Turning Professional
Thompson became a professional boxer in 2002. Many people thought he would quickly become a champion. However, his professional career faced a challenge in 2004. He lost a fight by TKO (Technical Knockout) to Grady Brewer.
After this loss, Thompson won several fights against different opponents. One notable win was against the experienced boxer Robert Frazier. These wins helped him get closer to challenging for a major boxing title.
On June 9, 2007, Thompson fought Yuri Foreman. This was a 10-round junior middleweight fight. It took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The fight was part of a bigger boxing event. Foreman won the fight by a split decision. This means that some judges thought Foreman won, and others thought Thompson won, but most judges picked Foreman.
Later, on August 15, 2008, Thompson had another fight against Ishmail Arvin in Washington D.C.. Thompson lost this fight by technical knockout in the sixth round. During the fight, Thompson got a cut above his left eye. This happened in the third round from an accidental headbutt. Even with the cut, Thompson knocked Arvin down twice in the same round. Thompson continued to fight well. However, the referee stopped the fight after the sixth round because of Thompson's cut.
