The Anthropological Society of Victoria

The Anthropological Society of Victoria was a special club for people who loved learning about humans. It started in 1934 in the state of Victoria, Australia. This society was a place for people to share ideas and discoveries about human history and culture.

What is Anthropology?

Anthropology is the study of humans. It looks at human societies, cultures, and how we have developed over time. Anthropologists study everything from ancient tools to modern customs. They want to understand what makes us human.

How it Started

The idea for the society came from a very talented teacher named Frederic Wood Jones. He gave many public talks in the 1930s. Lots of people, not just university students, came to listen to him. His exciting lectures made people want to learn more. Because of this interest, the Anthropological Society of Victoria was formed.

Joining Forces

Many years later, in 1976, the Anthropological Society of Victoria joined with another group. This group was the Archaeological Society of Victoria. Archaeology is the study of human history through digging up old things. When the two groups joined, they became the Archaeological and Anthropological Society of Victoria. This new, bigger society continued to explore human history and culture.
