Archaeological Society of Victoria facts for kids
Imagine digging up clues from the past to learn about people who lived long, long ago! That's what archaeology is all about. In 1964, a group of people in Victoria, Australia, who loved learning about history through digging, decided to form a special club called the Archaeological Society of Victoria. This society helped people learn more about the ancient history of Victoria.
What is the Archaeological Society of Victoria?
The Archaeological Society of Victoria was started in 1964. It was formed because many people were very interested in archaeology. This interest grew after University of Melbourne professor William (Bill) Culican gave some exciting talks about archaeology. These talks were part of the CAE.
Joining Forces: The AASV
Over time, the society grew. In 1976, it joined with another group called the Anthropological Society of Victoria. Anthropology is the study of human societies and cultures. When these two groups combined, they formed a new, bigger society. This new group was named the Archaeological and Anthropological Society of Victoria, often called the AASV for short.
Exploring Ancient History: Digging Up Clues
The society has done many important things for archaeology in Victoria. One of their big projects was digging at a place called Dry Creek, Keilor. This happened in the early 1970s. The goal of these digs was to find signs of people who lived there a very, very long time ago. They were looking for evidence of Aboriginal people from the Pleistocene period. The Pleistocene period was an ice age time, thousands of years ago! Finding these clues helps us understand the ancient history of Australia.
