The Antioch Missionary Baptist Church is a very old and important Baptist church in Downtown Houston, Texas. You can find it at 500 Clay Street. This church was once a key part of the Fourth Ward, a historic African-American neighborhood. As of 2012, it was the only part of the original Fourth Ward that remained east of Interstate 45.

This church holds a special place in Houston's history. It was started by former slaves in January 1866. This group formed Houston's very first African-American Baptist church. At first, they held their services outside in a place called the "Brush Arbor" near Buffalo Bayou. They built their first church building in 1867. The current church building was completed in 1875. In 1976, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's recognized as an important historical site.

A Church Built by Former Slaves

Starting a New Community

The Antioch Missionary Baptist Church began in 1866. This was right after the American Civil War ended. A group of former slaves came together to create Houston's first African-American Baptist church. This was a big step for their community.

Early Days and Growth

In the beginning, the church members met outdoors. They gathered in a simple spot known as the "Brush Arbor." This area was located along the Buffalo Bayou. Soon after, in 1867, they built their first church building. It was located at the corner of Bagby and Rusk streets. The church you see today was built in 1875.

Important Leaders and Legacy

Reverend Jack Yates

A very important person in the church's history was Jack Yates. He was a former slave who became the pastor of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. He helped lead the church and its community for many years. His leadership was key to the church's early success and growth.

A Lasting Presence

Over the years, Houston's downtown area grew a lot. By the 1950s, many new buildings were built around the church. These included large complexes like the Allen Center and the Hyatt Regency hotel. Even with all these changes, Antioch Baptist Church has remained. It is still an active church today. In 2003, a writer from the San Antonio Express-News noted its "Jesus Saves" sign. This sign stands tall among the modern skyscrapers. It shows that this historic church is still thriving.

Original Features and Recognition

The church still uses its original pews. These pews were made by hand a long time ago. This shows how much history is kept within its walls. In 2019, the church received a special honor. It became a UNESCO Slave Route Project site. This means it is recognized internationally for its important role in the history of slavery and freedom.
