Antirrhinum vexillo-calyculatum is a special kind of snapdragon flower. It's also known by other names like wiry snapdragon, sailflower snapdragon, or Brewer's snapdragon. This wildflower grows mostly in California and sometimes in Oregon, in North America. Its scientific name, Sairocarpus vexillocalyculatus, is another way to identify it.
What is the Wiry Snapdragon?
The wiry snapdragon is a unique plant that loves to climb! It uses its thin branches to wrap around other plants or objects, helping it grow upwards.
Its Beautiful Flowers
This plant produces lovely lavender-colored flowers. Lavender is a soft shade of purple. Each flower is about 1 to 2 centimeters wide, which is roughly the size of a small button. Look closely, and you'll see that the flower has a noticeable bottom "lip." Sometimes, these flowers even have darker purple stripes, making them extra pretty.
Where Does It Grow?
You'll find many wiry snapdragons in the lower mountain areas of northern and central California. They especially like to grow in rocky places. These plants are also known for growing in a special kind of ground called serpentine soil. This soil is unique because it has certain minerals that other plants might not like, but the wiry snapdragon thrives in it!
