Antoine-Stanislas de Curières de Castelnau Saint-Cosme Sainte-Eulalie (born in Saint-Cosme, Aveyron, in 1740 – died in Lyon in September 1783) was a brave officer in the French Navy. He played a part in the American Revolutionary War, which helped the United States become independent. He also became a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, a group for officers who fought in that war.
Sainte-Eulalie began his journey in the Navy in 1755. He joined as a Garde-Marine, which was a bit like a naval cadet or midshipman. His first major battle was the Battle of Minorca on May 20, 1756.
In 1765, he joined the Larache expedition led by Du Chaffault. During this mission, he was seriously injured. Because of his courage and actions, he was promoted to Lieutenant.
Service in the American Revolutionary War
In 1777, Sainte-Eulalie became the captain of the Flèche, an 18-gun corvette. A corvette is a smaller, fast warship. The next year, he moved to command the Aimable, a 26-gun frigate. A frigate is a medium-sized warship, bigger than a corvette. His ship was part of a fleet led by Vice-amiral d'Estaing, a high-ranking naval officer.
Sainte-Eulalie fought in several important battles during the war:
- The Battle of Rhode Island on August 29, 1778.
- The Battle of St. Lucia on December 15, 1778.
- The Battle of Grenada on July 6, 1779, where he was wounded again.
After these battles, Sainte-Eulalie was given command of the 32-gun frigate Railleuse. On this ship, he took part in the Battle of the Chesapeake on September 5, 1781. This battle was very important because it helped the American and French forces win the Siege of Yorktown.
Later Commands and Death
In 1782, Sainte-Eulalie took command of the Vaillant, a 64-gun ship. He sailed this ship back to France. Later, he captained two more large warships: the 74-gun Magnanime and the Téméraire.
