Anthoine Brun (1599–1654) was an important diplomat from a region called Burgundy (now part of France). He worked for King Philip IV of Spain.
About Antoine Brun
Antoine Brun was born on June 29, 1599. His father, Claude Brun, was a lawyer in Dole. Antoine studied law at the universities of Dole and Bourges.
In 1632, he became a top legal officer, like a chief prosecutor, in Dole. He helped lead the fight against the French army when they invaded his home region, Franche-Comté, in 1636.
A Diplomat for Spain
In 1642, Antoine joined the Supreme Council of Flanders. This was an important group that advised the King of Spain.
He played a big part in the talks that led to the Peace of Münster in 1648. This peace treaty helped end a long war in Europe.
After the peace treaty, Antoine became the first official ambassador for the King of Spain in the Dutch Republic. This was a new country that had just been recognized.
He moved to The Hague in 1649. His first official message as ambassador was sent on June 29, 1649. In 1650, he helped create a special agreement about ships with the Dutch.
Antoine Brun was also a writer. He published a French translation of letters by a famous scholar named Justus Lipsius. The book was called Le Chois des Epistres de Lipse (1650).
He passed away on January 2, 1654.
