Antoine de Noailles facts for kids
Antoine de Noailles was an important French nobleman who lived a long time ago, from 1504 to 1563. He became a high-ranking naval officer called an admiral of France. He also worked as a special representative, known as an ambassador, for France in England for three years, from 1553 to 1556. During his time there, he tried his best to compete with the Spanish ambassador, Simon Renard, but didn't quite succeed.
Antoine was the oldest of three brothers who worked as French diplomats. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in other nations. These three brothers were part of a very large family, as their parents, Louis de Noailles and Catherine de Pierre-Buffière, had 19 children! His brothers, Gilles and François, were also important church leaders and diplomats.
Antoine's Diplomatic Career
Antoine de Noailles started his career when he was 25 years old. His first big trip was with Francis de la Tour, the Viscount of Turenne, to Spain. Their mission was to arrange the marriage of the French king, Francis I of France, to Eleanor of Austria. Antoine even signed the final marriage contract, which was a very important job!
Helping France in Wars and Missions
After his first big success, Antoine helped France during the Italian wars. These were a series of conflicts where different European countries fought over control of Italian lands. He also went on two important missions to Scotland in 1548. These missions were likely to strengthen the friendship between France and Scotland.
His Family Life
Antoine de Noailles was married to Jeanne de Gontaut. After Antoine passed away, Jeanne became a lady-in-waiting to Catherine de Medici. A lady-in-waiting is a female assistant who helps a queen or other royal lady.
