Antoinette Becker (born Antoinette Mathis, 5 April 1920 – 29 August 1998) was a French-German author. She was especially known for writing books for children and young people. She also worked as a translator, helping to bring books and even operas to different languages. For example, she translated Aribert Reimann's opera Lear.

About Her Life

Antoinette Mathis was born in Strasbourg, a city in France, on April 5, 1920. She worked as a secretary for Ernst Rudolf Huber, a professor at a university in Strasbourg. There, she met Hellmut Becker, who was working as an assistant. Hellmut later became a lawyer and a politician focused on education.

Antoinette and Hellmut got married and had six children. Their children included Nicolas Becker, who became a lawyer, and Stephan Becker, a psychoanalyst. They also had a foster child named Joachim Nettelbeck.

Antoinette Becker was also a talented translator. She translated many works, including the opera Lear by Aribert Reimann. This translation was used for the opera's first performance in France in November 1982, at the Paris Opera. Antoinette Becker passed away in Berlin in 1998.
