Antonia Hylton, born on September 26, 1993, is an American journalist. She reports for NBC News. Antonia won an Emmy Award for her work on Vice News Tonight. She also helped create the podcast Southlake, which won a Peabody Award in 2022.
Early Life and Education
Antonia Hylton grew up near Boston, Massachusetts. She was one of seven children in her family. Both of her parents are lawyers. Her aunt, Soledad O'Brien, is also a well-known journalist.
As a child, Antonia loved to read. She also enjoyed performing. She sang in choirs, acted in musical theater, and was part of dance groups. In 2015, she graduated with high honors from Harvard University. She studied History and Science, with a focus on Global Health.
Journalism Career
Right after college, Antonia started working at Mic.com. She was a producer and writer for their news shows. These shows were called Flip the Script and Future Present.
While at Mic, Hylton met activist Darnell L. Moore. They worked together to create a documentary series. It was called The Movement with Darnell Moore. This series showed how people organize to make changes across the United States.
The next year, Antonia joined Vice News Tonight. She worked as a correspondent and producer. She covered important topics like civil rights and politics. She reported on many different issues, including community safety and immigration.
Antonia also worked as a correspondent for a news show called The Report. This show was on a platform called Quibi, which later closed down.
Reporting for NBC News
Currently, Antonia Hylton is a reporter for NBC News. In 2021, she became a co-reporter for NBC's podcast Southlake. This podcast explored a community in Southlake, Texas. It looked at how a local incident led to big discussions about fairness and education.
The Southlake podcast received many awards. It won a Peabody Award and a Scripps Howard Award. It was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Audio Reporting.
Antonia has shared her experiences as a Black woman reporter. She talks about the importance of being real and honest in her news stories.
Since 2019, Hylton has been a judge for the American Mosaic Journalism Prize. This award honors excellent journalism.
In 2024, Antonia Hylton published her first book. It is titled Madness: Race and Insanity in a Jim Crow Asylum. The book is about the history of Crownsville Hospital.
