Antonia (Tonia) Mills is a Canadian professor. She teaches about First Nations at the University of Northern British Columbia. She is now a professor emeritus, meaning she has retired but keeps her title.
Her main interests include the land claims of First Nations people. She also studies their religion and laws. Another big part of her work is reincarnation research. This is the study of whether people can be reborn after death.
Her Work and Research
Antonia Mills met Ian Stevenson in 1984. He was a professor and psychiatrist who studied reincarnation. She was very interested in his research on cases where people seemed to remember past lives.
Since 1964, she has done fieldwork with the Beaver Indians. This means she spent time living with them. She learned about their culture and beliefs.
Books and Publications
Antonia Mills has written and edited several important books. She helped edit Amerindian Rebirth: Reincarnation Belief Among North American Indians and Inuit (1994). This book explores beliefs about rebirth among Indigenous peoples in North America.
She also wrote Eagle Down is Our Law: Witsutit'en Feasts, Laws and Land Claims (1994). To write this book, she lived with the Witsuwit'en people for three years. She also worked as an expert witness for the Delgamuukw case. This was a major court case about Indigenous land rights.
In 2005, her book Hang On To These Words: Johnny David's Delgamuukw Testimony was published. This book shares important testimony from the Delgamuukw case.
She received a special award called a Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute Fellowship. This award helped her study young adults who said they remembered a previous life. She has also published many articles and book chapters in different journals.
Teaching
