Antonia Zárate (born 1775 in Barcelona, died 1811) was a famous Spanish actress. She was known for her talent on stage during the late 1700s and early 1800s.

Life and Career

Antonia Zárate was born with the name Antonia de Aguirre y Murguía. Her family came from the Basque region of Spain. Her father, Pedro de Zárate Valdés, was also an actor. He led a theater group that was performing in the Aragón area when Antonia was born.

Antonia Zárate became a successful actress. She performed in many parts of Spain, but she was most famous in Madrid, the capital city. Records show her performing in Madrid in 1797. She worked with other well-known actors of her time, like Rita Luna and Isidoro Máiquez.

She performed in important theaters in Madrid. These included the Coliseo de la Cruz and the Coliseo del Príncipe. By 1801, she was known for playing serious and important characters. Later, she also performed at the Teatro de los Caños del Peral.

Antonia Zárate was a friend of the famous Spanish artist Francisco Goya. He painted her portrait in 1805. This painting is now in the National Gallery of Ireland. Goya might have painted her again around 1810 or 1811.

She married Bernardo Gil y Aguado, who was a singer and a comic actor. In 1793, their only child, Antonio Gil y Zárate, was born in Madrid. Antonio later became a well-known poet and writer of plays.

Antonia Zárate passed away in 1811. She died from a lung illness called tuberculosis.
