Antonio (dancer) facts for kids
Antonio Ruiz Soler (born November 4, 1921, in Seville, Spain – died February 5, 1996, in Madrid, Spain) was a world-famous Spanish flamenco dancer, choreographer, and dance director. He was professionally known simply as Antonio, or sometimes Antonio el Bailarín ("Antonio the dancer").
For many years, from 1928 until 1952, he had a very famous dance partnership with Rosario (Florence Pérez Padilla). They were known as Rosario y Antonio and became famous all over the world for their amazing performances.
Dancing Around the World
Antonio and Rosario performed in many places, including the United States. In New York City, Antonio danced in Ravel's famous music piece, "Boléro".
He also appeared in several Hollywood movies. These included "Ziegfeld Girl" (1941) and "Hollywood Canteen" (1944). Later, he was in the movie "Honeymoon" (1959), which was made by the UK and Spain.
Forming His Own Company
In 1953, Antonio started his own Spanish ballet company. It was called Antonio y los Ballets de Madrid. Rosario also formed her own dance company around the same time.
Antonio created many dance pieces in both Spanish and classical styles. Several of his choreographed works were later performed by other dance companies.
