During a time when Spain was changing to a democracy (from 1976 to the early 1980s), Antonio Gala often spoke about his ideas. He supported left-leaning viewpoints, but he was not officially part of any political party.
In 1978, he spoke up for Andalusia to have more self-governance. This meant he wanted the region to have more control over its own laws and decisions.
In 1981, he became the president of the Spanish–Arab Friendship Association. He worked in this role for several years. This group aimed to build good relationships between Spain and Arab countries.
Antonio Gala also led a group that was against Spain staying in NATO. NATO is a military alliance. In 1986, there was a public vote (a referendum) in Spain about whether to stay in NATO. Antonio Gala was a strong voice for voting "no."
