Early Life and Education

Antonio Manuel Fernández was born in Springer, New Mexico. He went to public schools there. Later, he studied at Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

He also studied law at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee. After his studies, he worked as a court reporter. This job involves writing down everything said in court. He did this from 1925 to 1930.

Starting His Law Career

In 1931, Antonio Fernández became a lawyer. He started his own law practice in Raton, New Mexico. He also worked for the government. In 1933, he was an assistant district attorney.

He then moved his law practice to Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1934. His legal background helped him prepare for a career in politics.

Serving New Mexico

Antonio Fernández began his political journey in 1935. He was elected to the New Mexico House of Representatives. This is where state laws are made.

He also held other important state jobs. From 1935 to 1936, he was the chief tax attorney for New Mexico. Then, from 1937 to 1941, he was the first assistant attorney general. He helped the state's main lawyer.

In 1941 and 1942, he was part of the first New Mexico Public Service Commission. This group helps make sure public services like electricity work well.

In 1942, Antonio Fernández was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He started serving on January 3, 1943.

He was re-elected six times, serving in Congress until he passed away. He worked hard for New Mexico for many years. He was even the chairman of a special committee in Congress.

Antonio Fernández died on November 7, 1956, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This happened after he had been re-elected for another term. He was buried in Rosario Catholic Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
