Occupation(s) Singer

Antonio Cruz García, known as Antonio Mairena (1909–1983), was a famous Spanish musician. He was a flamenco singer who worked hard to save and bring back a special type of flamenco music. He believed this music was truly "pure" or "authentic."

Antonio Mairena found and brought back many old flamenco songs that were almost forgotten. He also wrote books and articles to share his ideas about flamenco music and its history. He saw himself as following in the footsteps of great flamenco singers like Manuel Torre. He also learned a lot from other masters such as Tomás Pavón and Joaquín el de la Paula.

Early Life and Awards

Antonio Mairena was born in 1909 in Mairena del Alcor, a town in the Seville Province of Spain. He grew up to become a very important figure in flamenco music.

He won many awards during his career. The most important award he received was the Llave de Oro del Cante, which means "Gold Key of Flamenco Singing." He won this special award at the third Concurso de Córdoba (Contest of Córdoba). Many people believed he truly deserved this honor because of all the amazing things he did for flamenco art.

Antonio Mairena passed away in Seville in 1983. He was 73 or 74 years old.
