History of Mairena del Alcor
Ancient Times
The area around Los Alcores has been a home for people since very old times. Archeologists have found proof that people lived here continuously since the Stone Age. Later, during the New Stone Age, small villages started to grow. People began farming the land.
Many old items from the Metal Ages have also been found. These include large stone tombs called megalithic tombs and pieces of pottery. A special treasure, called 'Andres Morales', was found here. It has fancy gold jewelry. This shows that the Tartessians, an ancient group, lived here thousands of years ago.
Over time, many different groups of people lived in this area. These included the Phoenicians, Greeks, Turdetani, Romans, Visigoths, and Arabs. Each group left their mark on the land and its history.
Middle Ages
During the time when Arabs ruled this region, a defensive tower was built. This tower might have been part of a system to watch over the area. It also helped protect important travel routes across Los Alcores.
In 1246, King Fernando III of Castile took over the village of Mairena. Then, on November 20, 1342, King Alfonso XI gave the land of Mairena to Pedro Ponce de León. This made Mairena separate from the nearby town of Carmona.
From that time on, the village belonged to the Casa de Arcos family. A castle was built in the 14th century. This castle helped the small town grow and develop. In 1441, King Juan II gave permission for a livestock market to be held here. This market is still a traditional festival today!
Modern Era
During the Renaissance, Mairena del Alcor grew a lot. This was partly because of the discovery of America. Trade across the Atlantic Ocean became very important.
The town started to produce more olive oil and cereals. Farming became very successful. People also became very good at raising and training horses. This was seen as a special skill and an art form.
