Antonio Martín y Coll facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Antonio Martín y Coll was a Spanish Franciscan friar, a composer, and a musician. He probably died sometime in the 1730s.

Biography

Antonio Martín y Coll grew up in a monastery, which is a special building where religious people live and work. He later became a Franciscan friar, a type of religious brother. He spent the last years of his life in a monastery called San Francisco el Grande in Madrid, Spain. He likely passed away there between 1733 and 1735.

Works

Martín y Coll was mainly an organ player. He also wrote two books, called treatises, in 1714 and 1734. These books probably shared his musical ideas and knowledge.

However, he is best known today for his four books called Flores de Música, which means "Musical Flowers." These books are a collection of hundreds of pieces for keyboard instruments. Most of these pieces did not have the composer's name written down. This is because the music was very popular at the time, and people already knew who wrote them.

Today, experts have figured out that many of these pieces were written by famous composers like Corelli, Handel, Frescobaldi, Cabanilles, and Cabezón.

There is also a fifth book in the Flores de Música collection. It is called Ramillete oloroso: suabes flores de música para órgano. This book mainly contains music for the organ, as its title suggests. Most people believe that the pieces in this fifth book were composed by Martín y Coll himself. Two of these pieces are variations on a famous tune called La Folia. One is a long piece called Diferencias sobre las Folías, and the other is a shorter one called Folías.
