Antonio Squarcialupi (born March 27, 1416 – died July 6, 1480) was a very famous Italian organist and composer. He was known as one of the best organists in Italy during the mid-1400s.

Life of Antonio Squarcialupi

Antonio Squarcialupi was born in Florence, Italy. His family name was Giovanni, but he later took the name Squarcialupi. This was the name of a well-known family from Tuscany. He might have changed his name to hide that his family was not from the noble class.

Antonio spent most of his early life in Florence. He likely learned music from other great musicians. These included Giovanni Mazzuoli and Matteo di Pagolo da Prato.

In 1431, he became the organist at the Orsanmichele church in Florence. He worked there for only two years. After that, he moved to the main cathedral in Florence, Santa Maria del Fiore. He stayed as the organist there for the rest of his life. There is even a special statue of him in this church to honor his work.

Music and Influence

Antonio Squarcialupi was an important musician in the court of Lorenzo de' Medici. Lorenzo de' Medici was a powerful and famous ruler in Florence. Antonio also worked with Guillaume Dufay, another well-known composer.

Many people praised Antonio Squarcialupi during his time. Some even compared him to famous artists like the sculptor Donatello. This shows how highly people thought of his musical talent. He was very close to Lorenzo de' Medici, which is mentioned on his tombstone in Florence Cathedral.

Sadly, none of Antonio Squarcialupi's own music has survived. However, he is still famous in music history for something very important. He owned a special book called the Squarcialupi Codex. This book is a huge collection of music from Italy in the 1300s. It is one of the most important sources we have for understanding music from that time. Antonio did not create the book himself, but he owned it and it was named after him.
