History of Antrim
How Antrim Started
Antrim was first planned and settled in the year 1830. The people who founded the community decided to name it after County Antrim, a place in what is now Northern Ireland. This was because many of the first families who settled here came from that area. Also in 1830, a post office was opened in Antrim, which helped people send and receive letters and packages until it closed in 1957.
Madison College: A Special School
Antrim was once home to an important school called Madison College. It was started in 1835 by Samuel Findley. What made Madison College very special for its time was that it allowed both young men and young women to attend classes. This was quite unusual back then, as many colleges only accepted men. Madison College was known for its good education and the variety of subjects it taught.
However, the college eventually closed after the American Civil War. Even though the community tried several times to open it again, it never did. The official permission for Madison College to operate was later taken over by its sister school, Muskingum College, which is in a nearby county.
Community Life and Services
Over the years, Antrim has grown and developed its own community spirit. The Antrim Presbyterian Church first opened its doors in 1890 and is still an active part of the community today. There is also another church, the Antrim United Methodist Church. Since 1948, Antrim has had a volunteer fire department. These brave volunteers help keep the community safe, covering a large area of over 180 square miles.
