History of Antón Lizardo
In January 1860, a small naval battle happened here. It was called the Battle of Anton Lizardo. Mexican rebels fought against warships from the United States Navy.
Since November 11, 1952, Antón Lizardo has been home to an important school. This school is the Heroica Escuela Naval Militar, which is Mexico's Naval Academy. It's where young people train to become officers in the Mexican Navy.
Beaches and Coral Reefs
Antón Lizardo has a long beach with soft, dark sand. The water here is usually calm and shallow. This makes it a great place for swimming and relaxing.
The Veracruz Coral Reef System
The beaches of Antón Lizardo are part of the Veracruz Coral Reef System. This system is a group of beautiful coral reefs underwater. These reefs are perfect for scuba diving. You can explore the amazing sea life there.
Visiting the Beaches
While the beaches are great for diving and calm waters, they don't offer much protection from the wind. Also, sometimes cars drive on them. During national holidays and the Carnaval celebration, the beaches in Antón Lizardo, like those in Veracruz and Boca del Río, get very crowded. Even though it's a small town, it's a very peaceful place to visit for a vacation.
