Anvil, Oklahoma facts for kids
Anvil is what we call a ghost town in Lincoln County, which is located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. A ghost town is a place where most or all people have left, and the buildings are often empty or falling apart. It's like a town that used to be busy but is now quiet and forgotten.
History
The area where Anvil was located became a community after a big event called the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889. This was a time when the United States government opened up new lands for people to settle. Thousands of people rushed to claim their own piece of land, hoping to start new lives and build towns.
Anvil got its name from a special rock nearby that looked like an anvil. An anvil is a heavy block of metal that blacksmiths use to shape other metals with a hammer.
A very important part of any growing town back then was a post office. It was where people could send and receive letters, which was how they communicated with family and friends far away. Anvil's post office opened in 1892. This meant the town was active and connected to the outside world. However, the post office closed its doors in 1904. When a town's post office closes, it often means fewer people are living there, and the town is starting to shrink or disappear.
