Syeda Anwara Taimur (born November 24, 1936 – died September 28, 2020) was an important Indian politician. She made history as the first female and Muslim Chief Minister of the state of Assam. She served in this top role from December 6, 1980, to June 30, 1981.

Early Life and Education
Anwara Taimur studied at Aligarh Muslim University. She earned a degree with honors in economics.
Before entering politics, she worked as a lecturer. In 1956, she taught economics at Debicharan Barua Girls College in Jorhat.
Political Journey
Anwara Taimur had a long and active career in politics. She was a leader in the Indian National Congress party for many years.
Chief Minister of Assam
Her most notable role was as the Chief Minister of Assam. She was the first woman and the first Muslim woman to hold this position in any Indian state. Her time as Chief Minister ended after about seven months. The state was then put under a special rule called President's rule for a short period.
Other Important Roles
Anwara Taimur was elected as a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly (MLA) four times. She served in 1972, 1978, 1983, and 1991. An MLA is a representative elected by people to make laws for their state.
She also held several important minister positions in the Assam government:
- From 1975 to 1978, she was the Minister for Education.
- From 1983 to 1985, she served as the Minister for Public Works (PWD). This department looks after roads and buildings.
- From 1991 to 1996, she was the Minister for Agriculture. This role involved helping farmers and managing farming policies.
In 1988, she became a member of the Rajya Sabha. This is one of the two houses of the Indian Parliament. She was nominated to this position, meaning she was chosen rather than elected by the public. She also served another term in the Rajya Sabha from 2004 to 2010.
In 2011, she joined a different political party, the All India United Democratic Front.
Later Life and Passing
Anwara Taimur spent her last four years living in Australia with her son. She passed away there on September 28, 2020, due to a heart attack.
