Aníbal Quijano facts for kids
Aníbal Quijano (born November 17, 1930 – died May 31, 2018) was a smart thinker from Peru. He was a sociologist, which means he studied how societies work. He is famous for his ideas about "coloniality of power" and "coloniality of knowledge". These ideas help us understand how old ways of thinking from colonial times still affect the world today. His work has been very important in studying how to break free from these old ways.
Education and Career
Aníbal Quijano went to the National University of San Marcos in Peru. There, he studied many subjects like history, anthropology, and law. He then earned a master's degree in Chile. Later, he got his PhD back at the University of San Marcos in 1964.
His PhD looked at how people from the countryside moved to cities in Peru. He also studied how their identity changed. Quijano taught at the University of San Marcos until 1995. He was also a professor at Binghamton University in New York.
Quijano was a visiting professor at many universities around the world. These included places in Paris, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Germany, Mexico, and Chile. He wrote many books and articles. These writings were about colonialism, politics, and how societies change.
