Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Aonghus Ruadh na nAor Ó Dálaigh was a famous Irish poet who lived from about 1550 to 1617. He was known for his sharp wit and his poems, which sometimes caused a lot of trouble!

Who Was Aonghus Ó Dálaigh?

Aonghus Ó Dálaigh belonged to a family group called the Muintir Bhaire sept. He lived in a place called Balliorrone in County Cork, Ireland.

A Poet's Unusual Job

During his time, Ireland was going through many changes. Powerful English leaders, like Sir George Carew and Mountjoy, hired Aonghus. His job was quite unusual for a poet. He was asked to write funny but critical poems about the Irish chieftains, who were local leaders.

The goal was to make these chieftains look bad and cause arguments among them. This was a way for the English leaders to weaken the Irish chieftains' power.

The Tribes of Ireland

Aonghus wrote a very famous collection of poems called The Tribes of Ireland. In these poems, he made fun of different Irish families and their leaders. He used his clever words to point out their weaknesses or things he thought were silly.

However, his poems were so sharp that they often made people very angry. One story tells how a servant of the O’Meagher family heard Aonghus making fun of his masters. The servant was so upset by the insults that he attacked Aonghus, and the poet died. This sad event ended Aonghus Ó Dálaigh's career.

Family and Legacy

Aonghus Ó Dálaigh had a son named Aonghus Óge Ó Dálaigh. Even many years later, in the 1830s, members of his family were still living in the same area of County Cork.
