Aoteadrillia is a group, or genus, of small sea snails. These snails are a type of marine gastropod mollusk. This means they are soft-bodied animals that live in the ocean, often with a shell. They belong to a scientific family called Horaiclavidae.
Scientists used to classify Aoteadrillia in a different group, the Turridae family. But now, based on new research, they are placed in the Horaiclavidae family.
What are Aoteadrillia Snails?
Aoteadrillia snails are a type of predatory sea snail. This means they hunt and eat other small creatures in the ocean. Like many snails, they have a spiral shell that protects their soft body.
These snails are found in marine environments, usually living on the seabed. They use a special tongue-like organ called a radula to capture their prey.
Discovering Aoteadrillia Species
A "species" is a specific type of animal that can reproduce with others of its kind. The genus Aoteadrillia includes several different species of snails. Some of these species are still alive today, while others are known only from fossils.
The `†` symbol next to a species name means that species is now extinct. This means it no longer exists on Earth.
Living and Extinct Species
Here are some of the species that belong to the Aoteadrillia genus:
- † Aoteadrillia alpha (L. C. King, 1933)
- † Aoteadrillia apicarinata (P. Marshall & R. Murdoch, 1923)
- † Aoteadrillia asper (Marwick, 1931)
- Aoteadrillia bulbacea (Watson, 1881)
- † Aoteadrillia callimorpha (Suter, 1917)
- † Aoteadrillia consequens (Laws, 1936)
- † Aoteadrillia exigua (Marwick, 1931)
- Aoteadrillia finlayi Powell, 1942
- † Aoteadrillia ihungia (Marwick, 1931)
- Aoteadrillia otagoensis Powell, 1942
