The Museum's Special Home
The building where the Apple Capital Museum is now located has been around for a long time. It was built in the 1800s and first served as a harness shop owned by Harry Lyons. A harness shop sells equipment for horses. Later, in the 1940s, a man named Howard Margeson bought the building. He used it for many different businesses, including a men's clothing store, a taxi service, and even a bicycle shop! In 1998, the Margeson family kindly gave the building to the museum. That same year, the museum officially opened its doors. It also shares the building with the tourist information center for Berwick.
Exploring the Exhibits
One of the main things you'll learn about at the Apple Capital Museum is the history of apples! The apple industry was very important to Nova Scotia. The museum has a large, working model railway that shows what the center of Berwick looked like in the 1930s. This was when the apple industry was at its busiest. You can see all the railway tracks and sidings of the Dominion Atlantic Railway that were used to transport apples.
Fun Events and Activities
The museum also hosts exciting events. Since July 2012, the Apple Capital Museum has held an annual vintage car rally. This event has become very popular! It brings together old cars, their drivers, and volunteers from all over Nova Scotia. Many people even dress up in old-fashioned costumes from the past.
Visiting the Museum
The Apple Capital Museum is managed by a group called the Apple Capital Museum Society. It is open during certain times of the year, usually in the warmer months. It's a great spot to learn about local history and see some cool old things!
