Appleby, South Dakota facts for kids
Appleby is a small place in Codington County, South Dakota, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it's a group of homes and buildings that doesn't have its own local government like a town or city does.
History of Appleby
Appleby got its start a long time ago. In 1884, a post office was opened there. A post office is where people send and receive letters and packages. This post office helped the people living in Appleby for about 13 years, closing down in 1897.
The community was named after a clever person named John Appleby. He was an inventor who created a very useful machine called a grain binder. This machine helped farmers harvest their crops, like wheat, much faster and easier than before.
