The Appleton-Hannaford House is a very old and important house located on Hancock Road in Dublin, New Hampshire. It was built around 1785 for the son of one of the first people to settle in the town. This house is special because it's one of the oldest buildings still standing in Dublin. It also shows a classic style of building called Georgian architecture, which hasn't changed much over time. Because of its history and unique style, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

About the Appleton-Hannaford House

The Appleton-Hannaford House sits in a quiet, countryside area in eastern Dublin. You can find it on the north side of Hancock Road, which is also known as New Hampshire Route 137. It's just east of Greenwood Road.

What the House Looks Like

The house is made of wood and has two and a half stories. It has a pointed roof, called a gabled roof, and a chimney right in the middle. The outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards, known as clapboards.

The front of the house is five sections wide. It has windows placed evenly around the main door. The windows on the first floor have fancy frames with small ledges above them. The main entrance has decorative columns on each side. Above the door, there's a flat piece of wood with a triangular shape on top, like a small roof. A smaller, one-story part of the house extends out to the right side. Inside, the house still has its original wide wooden wall panels.

Who Lived Here?

The Appleton-Hannaford House was built around 1785 by a man named Isaac Appleton. He was a successful farmer and an important person in the local government. Isaac was the son of one of the very first people to own land in Dublin.

Isaac Appleton did many important things for his town. He served as a town selectman, which means he was one of the elected officials who managed the town's affairs. He was also a trustee for the town library, helping to run it. On top of that, Isaac was a representative in the state legislature, meaning he helped make laws for New Hampshire.

The house stayed in the Appleton family for many years. In 1869, it passed to the Richardson family, who were related to the Appletons. Later, the Hannaford family owned the house until 1970. They were also connected to the Richardsons through marriage.
