Appleton Farm is an old farm located at 76 Brush Brook Road in Dublin, New Hampshire. For many years, it has been home to Del Rossi's Trattoria, an Italian restaurant. The farm was built in the 1780s by the son of one of the first families to settle in Dublin. It stayed in the same family until 1950. In 1983, the house and its nearby barn were added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are important historical places in the United States.
What is Appleton Farm?
Appleton Farm is found on the west side of Brush Brook Road. This road is also known as New Hampshire Route 137. The farm is about a quarter-mile north of where it meets New Hampshire Route 101. The property includes the main farmhouse and a barn. It covers about one acre of land.
The Farmhouse
The house is a two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof and a chimney in the middle. The outside is covered with flat wooden boards called clapboards. A smaller, one-story part of the house sticks out to the left. This part has windows that stick out from the roof.
The front of the house has three sections. The main door is in the middle. On either side of the door are windows. However, the window to the left of the door was changed later. It became a window with many sides, popular in the Victorian era.
The Barn
The barn is also made of wood and covered with clapboards. It has a square tower, called a cupola, in the middle of its roof. This cupola often helps with air flow inside the barn.
A Look at History
The Appleton Farmhouse was built around 1786 to 1789. It was built by Francis Appleton, Jr. His father was one of the first people to own land in this area. The farm stayed in the Appleton family until 1950.
Francis Appleton, Jr.'s son and grandson also owned this farm. They were very involved in local government. They served as town selectmen, who are like local leaders. They also served in the state legislature, which makes laws for the state. Since 1989, the farm has been home to Del Rossi's Trattoria, a popular Italian restaurant.
