What Was the ʻĀpua Village?
ʻĀpua was an ancient village in Hawaiʻi. It was known as a small fishing village. People lived there long ago, relying on the ocean for food. The village was found in the Puna district. This area is on the southern coast of the Island of Hawaiʻi. The village sat about 59 feet (18 meters) above sea level.
How Was ʻĀpua Destroyed?
Sadly, the village of ʻĀpua was completely destroyed. This happened because of a huge natural disaster. On April 2, 1868, a very strong earthquake hit Hawaiʻi. This earthquake caused a giant ocean wave called a tsunami. The tsunami crashed into the coast, wiping out the village. After this event, the village was never rebuilt or settled again.
ʻĀpua Point Today
Today, the area near the old village is called ʻĀpua Point. It is located just south of where the village used to be. This point is now a backcountry campground. It is part of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Visiting ʻĀpua Point
If you visit ʻĀpua Point, it's important to know a few things. There is no drinking water available there. Also, there are no other facilities like restrooms. The weather and ocean waves can be very dangerous. The path to ʻĀpua Point crosses over old and new lava flows. These flows come from the active volcano nearby.
