The Aquilegia chrysantha, also known as the golden columbine, is a beautiful flower that grows year after year. It's a type of herbaceous plant, which means it has soft stems instead of woody ones. You can find this plant growing naturally in the southwestern United States, from southern Utah all the way to Texas, and also in northwestern Mexico.

What Does the Golden Columbine Look Like?

This plant has interesting leaves and bright, cheerful flowers.

Leaves and Stems

The leaves of the golden columbine look a bit like ferns. Each leaf has three smaller leaflets, and each leaflet has three rounded sections, or lobes. These leaves grow from the very bottom of the plant, near the ground. They also grow off the long stems that hold the flowers.

Flowers and Their Parts

The golden columbine flowers usually appear in May and early June. They grow on tall stems that stand above the leaves. Each flower has five pointed yellow sepals. Sepals are like small leaves that protect the flower bud before it opens.

Inside the sepals, there are five bright yellow petals. What makes these flowers special are the long, hollow tubes called spurs. These spurs stick out backwards from the petals, between the sepals. In the very center of the flower, you'll see many yellow stamens. Stamens are the parts of the flower that produce pollen.

Special Varieties of Golden Columbine

Some types of golden columbine are especially popular for gardens.

The 'Yellow Queen' Cultivar

One special type of golden columbine is called 'Yellow Queen'. This specific plant has been recognized for its excellent qualities. It received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. This award means it's a great plant for gardens because it grows well and looks beautiful.
