History of Ara Christi
Building the Monastery
The Ara Christi monastery was built a long time ago, in 1585. A monk named Fray Antonio Ortiz designed it. A rich family from Valencia, the Roig family, helped pay for it. The first monks who lived here came from another monastery called the Porta Coeli Charterhouse.
Changes Over Time
The church inside the monastery was built in a style called Renaissance. This means it had a simple, balanced design. In 1808, during the time of Napoleon, soldiers took away many of the church's decorations and paintings.
The Carthusian monks had to leave the monastery in 1835. After them, another group of monks, called Capuchin monks, lived there. They stayed until the 1970s.
A Protected Landmark
In 1996, the Ara Christi Charterhouse was given a special title. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural for Spain. This means it's an important historical building that needs to be protected.
