History of Ara Christi Charterhouse
Building the Monastery
The Ara Christi Charterhouse was built in 1585. A monk named Fray Antonio Ortiz designed it. The Roig family from Valencia helped pay for its construction. The first group of monks came from another monastery. This was the Porta Coeli Charterhouse in Serra, Valencia.
Changes Over Time
The church inside the monastery had a simple, beautiful Renaissance style. In 1808, soldiers from Napoleon's army took away many of its decorations and paintings. Later, in 1835, the Carthusian monks had to leave the monastery.
After that, another group of monks, called Capuchin monks, lived there. They stayed until the 1970s. Then, they also moved out.
A Protected Landmark
In 1996, the Ara Christi Charterhouse was given a special title. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural for Spain. This means it is a very important historical building. It is now protected by the government.
