Araluen Botanic Park facts for kids

Araluen Botanic Park is a beautiful garden located in a quiet valley. It's found in the Darling Ranges, about 30 kilometers (18 miles) south of Perth, Western Australia. The park is in a suburb called Roleystone.

This amazing park covers about 59 hectares, which is like 145 football fields! You need to pay a small fee to enter, but it's open every single day of the year. Araluen Botanic Park has a mix of plants from all over the world. It also protects many native Australian plants that grow naturally there.

Park History

In 1929, a man named Jack Simons bought the land where the park is now. He bought it for an organization called the Young Australia League (YAL). The YAL used this special place as a holiday camp for young people.

Years later, in 1985, the YAL decided to sell the Botanic Gardens part of the property. A private company planned to build new things on the land. However, the local communities really loved the park. They worked together to ask the state government to buy it instead.

Because of the strong support from the community, the government bought the park in 1990. Soon after, the Araluen Botanic Park Foundation was created in July 1990. Their main goal was to help restore and care for the park. Since 1995, this Foundation has been managing the park, making sure it stays beautiful for everyone to enjoy.

What You Can Find There

Araluen Botanic Park has many cool things for visitors. You can find a gift shop where you can buy souvenirs. There's also a cafe with tearooms, which is a great spot for a snack or a drink. It even has a function center for special events.

The park offers plenty of parking and clean toilets. One of the most fun attractions is a miniature train that takes you on a ride! There are also many walkways and paths, perfect for exploring the gardens on foot. The old swimming pool in the park has been changed into a lovely lake.

Events and Activities

Araluen Botanic Park hosts exciting events throughout the year. Every spring, they have a popular Tulip Festival. The park becomes filled with colorful tulips, which is a wonderful sight! In summer, they sometimes host the Fremantle Chilli Festival.

From 1997 to 2007, the park also held an annual folk music festival each spring. This brought many musicians and music lovers to Araluen. For younger visitors, children's activity days are often held during school holidays. These days are full of fun and educational activities for kids.
