Arantza Quiroga's Early Life and Start in Politics
Arantza Quiroga grew up in Irún. Her father was from Valladolid, and her mother was Basque. When she was 21, she joined Nuevas Generaciones. This is the youth movement of the People's Party in Spain. Soon after, she was elected as a local councillor for Irún. This was her first step into politics.
Three years later, her political career really began to grow. She gave an important speech at a party meeting in Madrid. The speech was about the 20th anniversary of Spain's first democratic elections. This marked a big moment when Spain became a democracy.
Her Time in the Basque Parliament
Quiroga was first elected to the Basque Parliament in 1998. She represented the area of Gipuzkoa. She has been a continuous presence in the parliament since then. She did lose her seat in the 2001 election. However, she re-entered parliament shortly after. This happened because another People's Party member, María San Gil, stepped down from her Gipuzkoa seat.
In 2009, after the elections, her party made an agreement with another group, the PSE-EE. Because of this agreement, the People's Party announced that Arantza Quiroga would be their choice for President of the Basque Parliament. She was elected as the Speaker on April 3, 2009. She officially opened the new Parliament with a speech. She spoke in both Basque and Spanish. She served in this important role until November 20, 2012.
