Archdeacon of Brechin facts for kids
The Archdeacon of Brechin was an important church leader in the diocese of Brechin (an area managed by a bishop). This person was the only archdeacon in that area and worked under the Bishop of Brechin. The Archdeacon also managed the parish church of Strachan and received income from it, which was called a prebend. This arrangement was in place from at least 1274.
What is an Archdeacon?
An archdeacon is a senior leader in a Christian church, usually working under a bishop. Think of them as a bishop's main helper or manager for a specific area called a "diocese." They help the bishop with many tasks, like making sure churches are running well and that church rules are followed.
In the past, archdeacons had a lot of power. They would visit churches, check on the clergy (priests and ministers), and make sure everything was in order. The Archdeacon of Brechin was special because they were the only archdeacon in their diocese. This meant they had a big role in helping the Bishop of Brechin manage the church's affairs in that region.
