Robert's Early Years
Robert de Cardeny was the son of John Cardeny. He also had a sister named Mariota. She was connected to King Robert II of Scotland. Robert's early life is not very well known.
In the late 1370s, King Robert II asked the Pope for a special church position for Robert. This was for a "canonry" in the diocese of Moray. A canonry is a job for a priest who is part of a cathedral's group of clergy. Robert already held similar positions in other church areas.
His Time as a Student
Robert was also a student at the University of Paris. He was part of King Robert's household, meaning he worked for the king. In 1381, he earned a "Licentiate" degree from Paris. This degree showed he was qualified in his studies. By 1394, he was known as "Master Robert de Cardeny."
Becoming a Bishop
Before he became the Bishop of Dunkeld in 1398, Robert was already the "Dean" of Dunkeld. A Dean is a senior leader in a cathedral. He was chosen to be bishop by Pope Benedict XIII on November 17, 1398. He officially became the Bishop of Dunkeld in November of the next year.
Some people said that Robert got this important job because King Robert III liked his sister, Mariota. King Robert III was the son of King Robert II.
Leading the Diocese
Robert de Cardeny was a bishop for nearly 40 years. This long period is called his "episcopate." During his time, he made sure the Abbot of Iona followed the rules of Dunkeld in 1431. An abbot is the head of a monastery.
In 1433, he was a witness for the founding of a new church. This was the Collegiate Church of Methven. He also helped with important meetings. For example, he was an "auditor" for the parliament in 1429–30. An auditor helps check things, like accounts or rules.
Building and Legacy
During Robert's time as bishop, new parts were built for Dunkeld Cathedral. A "nave" was added, which is the main part of a church where people sit. A new chapel was also built. This chapel was dedicated to Saint Ninian, a very old Scottish saint.
Bishop Robert had a son named Patrick de Cardeny. Patrick later became a clerk in the Dunkeld church area. Bishop Robert passed away on January 16 or 17, 1437.
