Where is Arctic Springs?

Arctic Springs is a neighborhood found in the city of Jeffersonville. Jeffersonville is a city in the state of Indiana. It sits on the northern bank of the Ohio River. Arctic Springs is quite close to the heart of Jeffersonville. It is also directly opposite the city of Louisville, Kentucky. You can even see Louisville's well-known Water Tower from Arctic Springs.

From Resort to Water Source

Long ago, Arctic Springs was a popular place for people to visit. It was known as a resort area. Many families built summer cottages here to enjoy their vacations. In the 1920s, a group called the Jeffersonville Elks Club had a very popular outdoor dance hall in Arctic Springs. People would come to dance and have fun.

Later, Arctic Springs became important for a different reason. It helped supply water to the rest of Jeffersonville. This area has a special natural underground water source. It's called an aquifer. Wells were dug here to get fresh water from this aquifer. This water was then used by the people living in Jeffersonville.

What is an Unincorporated Place?

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) lists Arctic Springs as an "Unincorporated place." This means it's a community that doesn't have its own local government. Instead, it's usually part of a larger county or city's government. Even though it's a recognized place, it doesn't have its own mayor or city council.
