Ardabur was an important general in the East Roman army during the 420s. He worked for Emperor Theodosius II. Ardabur came from the Alans, a group of people from ancient times.

Ardabur's Military Career

Ardabur was a very skilled military leader. He held the title of magister militum, which means "master of soldiers." This was a top military rank, similar to a supreme commander.

War Against Persia

In 421 and 422, Ardabur fought in a war against the Persians. This was known as the Roman-Persian War. During this time, he led his troops to attack a region called Arzanene. He also tried to capture the city of Nisibis. After the war ended, Ardabur was given an even higher military position.

Campaign in Italy

In 424, Ardabur and his son, Aspar, were sent on a special mission. They traveled to Italy to deal with a problem. A man named Joannes had illegally taken control as emperor. Ardabur and Aspar's job was to remove him from power.
