The Chamber of Deputies is like one of the two main groups of lawmakers in Argentina. It's part of the Argentine National Congress, which is where laws are made for the whole country. This group is also called the "lower house."
This Chamber has special jobs. They are the only ones who can suggest new taxes or decide about the country's army. They can also call important people like the President, government ministers, or judges from the Supreme Court to answer questions in front of the Senate (the other main group of lawmakers).
There are 257 members in the Chamber of Deputies. About half of these members are chosen in elections every two years.
Who Can Be a Deputy?
To become a member of the Chamber of Deputies, a person needs to be at least 25 years old. They also must have lived in the province they want to represent for at least four years.
How Many Deputies Per Province?
The number of deputies from each province depends on its population. For every 161,000 people in a province, there is one deputy. Each province also gets three extra deputies, no matter its size. Every province must have at least five deputies in total.
